FUBUNATION

FUBUNATION is a London based organisation founded in 2017 by Rhys Dennis and Waddah Sinada, with the vision of expanding visibility and representation for black dancers in contemporary dance. FUBUNATION’s movement incorporates a range of dance techniques emerging from Black communities including street & African dance styles, resulting in a uniquely refined movement quality cultivated over a combined 30+ years of training

Since the debut performance of their highly successful duet RUINS at the Festival of Alternative Theatrical Expression in Croatia (2017), FUBUNATION have gained national and international recognition for their work. RUINS was programmed 24 times, including as part of Aerowaves (2021) & a film adaptation digitally archived by V&A.

FUBUNATION’s methodology & practice holds space for complex experiences of identity by creating space for discussion & experimentation in varied movement language.

BLACK IS

2022- tour ongoing

FUBUNATION (Choreography) Rhys Dennis, Waddah Sinada, Mayowa Ogunnaike, Rose Sall Sao (R&D Performers), Sam Nunez (Composer), Kieron Johnson (Lighting designer)

BLACK IS is a new dance work by FUBUNATION looking at themes of displacement & migration in the African Diaspora. It challenges perceptions of black culture by honouring the collective heritage black people share as a result of marginalisation in white-dominated societies, whilst acknowledging that our experiences are varied & individual.

How does not belonging in a western world compromise one's sense of identity & affect one’s sense of home?

Aimed at Black audiences and other diaspora communities, BLACK IS will contribute to an urgent, nuanced dialogue about immigration & belonging.
